THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"You will not read a more important book about America this year."The Economist

"A riveting book."The Wall Street Journal

"Essential reading."David Brooks, New York Times

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love," and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that J.D.'s grandparents, aunt, uncle, and, most of all, his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, never fully escaping the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. With piercing honesty, Vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history.

A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.

“Middletown has such a special place in my heart. It’s where I was raised the first 5 years of my life, where my mom continues to teach in the city schools, and where I started my journey of working with children and families. The author doesn’t sugar coat the impact drugs have had on the town while also describing the deep sense of family and community you’ll find between neighbors. Being able to picture the setting so clearly and frequenting many of the places mentioned (Central Avenue, the infamous Chinese buffet, KMart, AK Steel) led to such a unique reading experience. The author’s closing chapter reflects a very individualistic mindset, ignoring how various people throughout the span of his life helped to lead him to where he is now. He reflects everyone should have the ability to do what he did, like a pick yourself up by the bootstraps cliche, without recognizing the systems in place that inhibit some people from doing just that. While I don’t always agree with the author’s policies and positions, I can (sometimes) see where such ideas come from and have empathy for the adversity he faced growing up.”
“I had to give this 5 stars. I had no idea what, exactly, I was going to read in this book. It was inspiring to say the least. The fact that JD Vance has come so far in his life is just pure inspiration. Although, I may not relate to the hillbilly lifestyle, the traumas I’ve personally experienced were vaguely similar and it’s truly inspiring reading about someone who came out of that. It is amazing to read about a political figure for the AMERICAN people. Not the greedy and the rich, but the try working class people. JD Vance didn’t come from a comfortable lifestyle, he came from nothing and made something for himself and I admire that so much - especially now since he is the current VP. The ideals he discusses are extremely profound, it really makes you think! I may edit my review later, I can’t think of much as I’m just absorbing this, but I strongly encourage all those who feel they’ve come from nothing and had such a “hard childhood” to read this book and be inspired.”
