High Jinx

By Kelley Armstrong
High Jinx by Kelley Armstrong digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Curse weaver Kennedy Bennett has re-settled into her beloved hometown and opened a shop selling previously hexed antiques. When she fails to win an online auction for a notorious cursed painting, Aiden Connolly—the wealthy and swoon-worthy luck worker she is not dating—swoops in to buy it for her.

Crying Girl is one of a quartet of haunted legendary paintings. Kennedy knows that the "ghosts" are actually curses—fatal ones. The paintings have been missing for years, and Kennedy is thrilled at the chance to uncurse one…until Crying Girl disappears before they can collect it.

Kennedy and Aiden soon discover that the painting hasn't been randomly whisked out of their reach. Someone used it to lure them in, and now that they've snatched the bait, they've been snared in a trap. Either the thief gets what they want…or the four paintings are going to find their way back into the world, and Kennedy and Aiden will be responsible for the deadly chaos the cursed portraits wreak.

“I wasn't the biggest fan of the first book in this Duology, nor the novella, but I love Kelley Armstrong, so wanted to give this a go. I wouldn't have minded skipping it. The plot is interesting, and I love how the Greek Gods are represented and pulled into a modern setting BUT... The dialogue was very stilted. Especially between the FMC and MMC, it felt like they were constantly negotiating a business deal, and I felt none of the (limited) spark from the first book. Because of this, when they eventually do get together, it feels like zero to a hundred, and I just didn't care. Kelley can DO slow burns, they are in a few of her series, so I know she can do better than this, so it's disappointing. Aside from this, a lot of the plot/backstory is delivered through 'tell not show' and navel gazing. Not something I expect from Kelley, so again, a disappointment. The book is FINE, and I enjoyed it, but there are much better Kelley Armstrong books out there. It didn't hit the spot.”
