High Fidelity by Nick Hornby digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Now a Hulu TV series starring Zoë Kravitz!

"I've always loved Nick Hornby, and the way he writes characters and the way he thinks. It's funny and heartbreaking all at the same time."—Zoë Kravitz

From the bestselling author of About a Boy, A Long Way Down and Dickens and Prince, a wise and hilarious novel about love, heartbreak, and rock and roll.

Rob is a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob seeks refuge in the company of the offbeat clerks at his store, who endlessly review their top five films; top five Elvis Costello songs; top five episodes of Cheers.

Rob tries dating a singer, but maybe it’s just that he’s always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think that life with kids, marriage, barbecues, and soft rock CDs might not be so bad.

“Here is one of the rare instances where I saw the movie before reading the book, however I saw the movie years ago so I figured I was safe and wouldn’t remember anything. I enjoyed the music facts, top 5 lists and the characters of Dick and Barry. I found all that to be very humorous. I think many readers will see themselves or friends in this book, it’s very relatable and relevant. I did not care for Rob. I think he’s whiny, self-pitying, stalkerish and I wanted more for Laura. While Rob is a realistic character he is also very draining. This is where I had trouble divorcing book Rob from movie Rob because I liked John Cusack’s portrayal in the movie. Many have called this a response to chick-lit, like a bro-lit and for that alone it’s worthy. I got this book on super sale, but if I had to do it all over again I would have just watch the movie and be satisfied with that.”
“Not the first time I read it, but this time it's special, cause Craig read it too? Still fantastic though :)”
“I absolutely loved the beginning of this book! It sucked me in right away and didn’t let up for the whole first part. However, though I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a whole, the second part of the book didn’t have quite the same appeal for me that the first part did. I really enjoyed Rob’s (the main character’s) perspective on relationships and life in general. He’s quite insecure in many ways, but it’s easy to relate to his thoughts and feelings, especially when he puts such a humorous twist on things. I really loved reading about the dynamic of the record shop and his employees. The guys he works with are just classic characters, the type of guys you feel like you know. The ending was a little cheesy for my taste, but overall I really enjoyed the book and I’m planning to read Hornby’s other novels.”
