“It was slow burn and so many characters but was worth it.”
“When I first started reading Hide and Seek, I was hooked within the first few chapters. There are some reveals early on which made me interested to read on and find their conclusion. By the midway point of the book, I felt there was a bit of repetition and the story wasn’t advancing as quickly as I’d have liked. The story is told from two different years: 1985 and 2018 (present day). There’s a large character pool and a lot of these people exist in both time periods. It became super confusing for me at times and was hard to follow when dipping in and out of the story. However, the pace picked up towards the end of the book and it came to a satisfying conclusion that was hard to predict. If you like twisty, domestic thrillers where everyone is a suspect, you’ll like this one.”
“Hide and Seek by Andrea Mara is a psychological thriller, following the story of Joanna, who discovers that her new home was once connected to the disappearance of a child. Joanna stops at nothing to uncover the truth and solve the 33 year old mystery.
The first 50% of the book was incredibly slow paced and slightly boring. The story gradually picks up, until it reaches an ending of unexpected twists and turns.
The biggest challenge I had with this book was the high volume of side characters, many of whom were totally irrelevant to the plot. As the story regularly jumped from the present to 33 years in the past, I was often confused with who was related to who. As a result, I found it extremely difficult to connect to any of the characters.
There were times when I was totally engaged in the plot and times when I completely lost interest. Even though the ending saved this book for me, I personally wouldn't recommend it.”
