“Beter, veel beter dan 'on being mortal' van Gawande. Voor de Amerikanen is Het refrein misschien zelfs een mooi (zij het wat hyperbolisch) inkijkje in de Nederlandse euthanasiepraktijk. Bij tijd en wijlen voel je zelfs de 'house of god' vibe maar dan in een Nederlands verpleeghuis.
Dit is honderd procent verplichte kost voor alle dokters. Voor mij was het allemaal erg herkenbaar omdat ik met exact dezelfde zaken worstel als 'Anton' - al blijf ik bij de Hoop en Keizer overduidelijk niet. Eigenlijk is Het refrein meer een filosofisch werk dan een 'medisch' werk, omdat het meer vragen oproept dan het beantwoordt. Maar dat is juist de grote kracht, omdat wij dokters ook niet de antwoorden hebben. Beter dat je je daar snel van bewust wordt.”
