Ze zijn er weer.
Mijn hart bonst terwijl ik door het keukeraam kijk.
Al weken vallen ze ons lastig, vernielen ze onze spullen en intimideren ze onze kinderen. Het houdt niet op.
De politie neemt hen niet serieus; het zijn tieners. Maar zij weten niet hoe het is om zo te leven. Die meiden hebben vrij spel en maken ons het leven zuur, en het is zo ver gekomen dat ze er elke keer zijn als we het huis verlaten, ons uitlachen. Ze volgen ons overal.
We hebben het zat.
Dus midden in de nacht pakken mijn man Howard en ik ons gezin in de auto en vertrekken naar een afgelegen huisje in de met sneeuw bedekte wildernis van de Schotse Hooglanden.
Als de kerstochtend aanbreekt, staan de kinderen te trappelen om aan de feestelijkheden te beginnen. Onze oudste dochter, Taylor, reikt naar haar kerstsok, haar ogen fonkelen van opwinding. Maar wanneer ze erin kijkt, verandert haar blije uitdrukking in pure angst. De tijd staat stil terwijl we met ongeloof staren naar het onheilspellende voorwerp dat uit het inpakpapier valt en we beseffen dat er geen ontsnappen aan is.
