“It's hard to understate how excellent this two-part series is. The story is told through the lens of the African storytelling tradition and is filled with rich cultural signifiers and details. The art is evocative, and the writing is clever and engaging.
One of the things I loved most about this comic book was the way it breathed new life into a familiar character. The attention to detail was impressive, the sounds of the ant men when they attack, and the dance the giants in the bag make when Hellboy/Makoma wins feel authentic and grounded.
Overall, I highly recommend Makoma to fans of the original character, as well as to readers who are looking for something fresh and exciting in an ancient tradition. It's an excellent example of how a beloved character can be reinterpreted in a new and exciting way while staying true to the original spirit."”
