“This book is, perhaps, too politically correct. But I did enjoy reading it. I also wish that it embraced the horror of this experience a little bit more. The writing is almost numb to the monstrosities, but this does align with the mindset of the main character and bring the reader more fully into his POV. But I would have liked to hear more detailed or visceral descriptions of turning into a monster. In some ways, I think the story suffers from being YA. It might be better if it was more explicit in the horror. However - the themes of embracing monstrosity juxtaposed against embracing queerness (and specifically transness) was really really interesting. I liked that Benji’s transness wasn’t the main conflict, and while it certainly is a main part of the story, it isn’t the issue or struggle at the heart of the story. It is embraced, while the monstrous transformation and choices of being good (and what that means in a post apocalyptic world with a main character escaping a cult) is the main conflict. Overall I’m glad I read it.”
