“I didn't know that Jo Graham had a new novel out--I found it when I was wandering through a Borders in London, had a head-tilt moment of 'that name seems familiar...', and then lunged for it. I didn't buy it right then, as I was late, but I went back to a Waterstones the morning of my flight. I sat down, thinking I'd only read a few pages and then order it when I got home... yeah, I read five pages and ended up leaving with it.
Hand of Isis is set in the same world as Black Ships; indeed, some of the characters from Black Ships have been reincarnated as characters in Hand of Isis. There are hints early on that Charmian is in fact Gull reincarnated, and there are hints for other characters peppered throughout the novel as needed. Their identities are not spoilers or secrets--the reader's knowledge of them turns out to enrich their experience of the narrative.
I loved this book and was sad when it was over. It reawakened my love of Egyptian history, and it's one of the best novels I've found that makes Cleopatra human. True, she's Cleopatra and all that entails, but she's also a mother, sister, lover, and ruler. Even knowing the tragic outcome of this novel, I found it hard to put down. I think it's time to give Black Ships a reread later this year. Fantastic books, well worth picking up.”
