Hand in Glove
ByPublisher Description
A deadly dull man is now just plain dead in this novel by “a peerless practitioner of the slightly surreal, English-village comedy-mystery.” —Kirkus Reviews
One has to admit that the timing was peculiar. No one could doubt that Mr. Percival Pyke Period was genuinely distraught to hear that his neighbor, Harry Cartell, had turned up dead in a ditch. But how is it that Mr. Percival Pyke came to write the letter of condolence before the body was found? And how is it that Mr. Cartell came to inspire such violence? Yes he was boring, yes he was stuffy, but who would kill a man for the crime of being a bad conversationalist? If tediousness has become grounds for murder, Inspector Alleyn shudders to think of the body count to come . . .
“The brilliant Ngaio Marsh ranks with Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers.” —Times Literary Supplement
“Any Ngaio Marsh story is certain to be Grade A.” —The New York Times

“Falling somewhere between a 3 and 4, I'm feeling generous enough to round it up to a 4. I am not nearly as critical of Marsh books as I am of Christie's as the caliber is not the same. I enjoy Marsh's main characters, particularly the duo of Alleyn and Fox, who operate like a well-oiled machine. She does have a tendency of writing book-specific characters which are highly unlikeable, even in the victim category. The dialogue also has a tendency of being a bit uneven, and not as natural as other writers. This particular book was better in that regard, although not as good as her last outing, False Scent.
I do give her a round of applause for her continual invention of unorthodox and unlikely murder methods; one would think eventually she would run out of new ways of knocking people off. I also acknowledge that reading her books back to back for months on end makes them feel more formulaic than regular readers might have felt reading them as they were published. She is also locked into the police procedural process, as utilizing a police detective (rather than amateur sleuth), means that certain rules and conventions must be followed in order for the case to survive in court. Still, I enjoy getting lost in the stories, and they are quick reads to boot.”
