“gut symmetries is such a singular book; there is nothing i’ve read like it. first, jeanette winterson is a brilliant writer, the kind of author that makes you pause at sentences, re-read them, and think “damn that’s good. i’d never think of putting words together like that.” here is a prime example:
“For a few days, at least, the expensive antibodies of illusion and excess are sufficient to stall the effects of aging and apathy, jolting even the most coffin-like into pink cheeked pleasure.” (this sentence is literally just about how people become inordinately happy on cruise ships)
honestly, her writing alone merits a 4 star. but the plot was also surprising and it kept me on the edge of my seat. the event at the end was totally unexpected and i was shocked. simply a novel that is engaging in every way.”

About Jeanette Winterson
A novelist whose honours include England’s Whitbread Prize, and the American Academy’ s E. M. Forster Award, as well as the Prix d’argent at the Cannes Film Festival, Jeanette Winterson burst onto the literary scene as a very young woman in 1985 with Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. Her subsequent novels, including Sexing the Cherry, The Passion, Written on the Body, and The PowerBook, have also gone on to receive great international acclaim. Her latest novel is Lighthousekeeping, heralded as "a brilliant, glittering, piece of work" (The Independent). She lives in London and the Cotswolds.
