“I read this with the intention of seeing the origin of so many tales, as well as hoping for something to delight the senses and imagination. I enjoyed recapping The Travelling Musicians - and loved the tale of the Elfin Grove. It was interesting to see the parallels between Cat-Skin and Elizabeth Lim's Spin the Dawn (although I prefer the latter, even if the inspiration was derived from the former). Sadly a lot of the other tales were mainly composed of silly people in odd situations spouting more folly than you'd think conceivable. I'd hoped for something a little darker, a little more mysterious, though perhaps 19th Century literature for children replaced good plots with 'harmless' oddness, which can't even be celebrated as quirkiness. A good book for reference, though not much more.”
