“Why did virtually nothing happen for 85% of this book?? What was the point of the list of Pietre Magiche if they have zero relevance to the plot other the than the mentions of the Nightflame and a list with the rest of the stones at 95%?
Leaving the way underdeveloped magical system aside, the romance left me wanting to smack some sense into Ravenna. I don’t understand WHY she fell in love with Saturnino. He literally spent the entire book being an asshole until suddenly he decided to stop (took him drowning repeatedly to do that btw). I don’t mind a slow burn, but the connection seemed shallow.
I had to fight demons to get through this damn book. The premise was promising, but the execution left so much to be desired. I had been so excited about this book taking place in Renaissance Florence…but honestly, it could have taken place at any point in history because the geographical/historical setting contributed nothing to the plot.”
“The cover and the renaissance setting pulled me but unfortunately this book did not really do it for me. The writing quality really distracted from the coolness of the plot. It had some shining moments but I kept getting frustrated by the writing.
Ravenna’s selective use of religion was awful. She’s apparently very devout but I didn’t really see it. She says one prayer before the first written mealtime and tells the family she has to go to mass on Sundays but it’s never shown. Also, her brother is suddenly a full on priest?? They’ve been separated for a few weeks? You can’t become a priest in a few weeks. And him and his accomplices take turns using the rosary… say it together bros and two of you count on your hands! Renaissance Christianity can’t be that much different from the Catholicism I know.
Overall, this one had a lot of promise, the plot was fine, and the magic system cool but needing more detail. The writing was just pretty bad. Also at least two typos…”
