“The first section of this book was amazing. Had me hook line and sinker, but the next two parts weren’t even worth the pages they were written on.
The amount of sexism and misogyny, just wasn’t believable. Every man is a villain? How original, queue the eye roll. There are ways to make a message about misogyny without having to spoon feed your audience. The amount of times this author had me rolling my eyes, because of the badly written men in this book, I’m surprised my eyes are still okay, cause I know I sprained some eye muscles. I’m sick of the low level feminism books like this. If you want to make a statement, don’t insult me to do it. This book is an insult to women everywhere who have had to deal with misogynistic but charismatic men, the ones who hide their sexism behind a pretty face. The ones that manipulate and use women to their own advantage or just to prey upon. It’s not in your face, it’s subtle. I think it really shows your talent as an author if you are able to take not only the characters on a journey of falling in love with these villainous men, but the audience as well, just to pull the rug out from underneath us when we are feeling safe.
And don’t even get me started on the ending of this book, what even was that? No satisfying reason as to why the women were taken other than the shitposts they made on some anonymous chat room? What a waste of my time. If the author had just stuck with the first story it would have been a great book, but I don’t even think the author knew what story she was writing until the very end, and by that point she just wanted to be done writing so she asked chat gpt to write the ending for her.
2 stars for the first part, negative 5 stars for the rest”
“If you combined The Truman Show, The Cabin in the Woods, and The Running Man, then sprinkled in a heavy dose of incel culture, misogyny, and feminine rage, you’d get this book. The book follows three different women who find themselves trapped in scenarios that feel disturbingly familiar yet utterly wrong: Celia wakes up in a picturesque town where she is supposedly a beloved wife and mother, but she has no memory of this life. Allie is on a birthday trip with friends at a remote cabin, only to realize they are being hunted by a killer who follows the rules of a horror movie. Maggie finds herself in a dystopian competition where she must navigate a deadly obstacle course to survive. As their stories unfold, the mystery of how these three disparate nightmares connect begins to reveal a dark commonality. Henry hits the gas on page one and never takes her foot off the pedal. Told from three different POVs, the narrative structure keeps the energy high and the mystery deepening with every chapter. The transitions between the women’s stories are seamless and keep you guessing. For fans of visceral horror, this novel doesn't shy away from the carnage. It also manages to be an unputdownable mystery thriller. What elevates this beyond a simple slasher or sci-fi flick is how Henry tackles incel culture and misogyny. The feminine rage fueling these characters is palpable and incredibly satisfying to witness as they begin to fight back against the roles they’ve been forced into. It’s a sharp, violent, and necessary critique of the ways women are often pigeonholed in both fiction and reality.”
