“DNF @ 20% …. maaaad slow & boring. unlikable characters”
“Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the advanced listener copy of this modern gothic novel. The more I sit with this one the more I like it. This is the perfect combination of weird girl modern lit meets Rebecca, but make it more psychological.
From the very beginning this had me in a choke hold. I paused this book numerous times to sit and think about the choices made by the female main character and the conversations had around feminism, identity and sexuality.
The psychological games being played built steadily without feeling overwhelming until you as the reader are unsure of reality. While I have seen many critiques of the plot progression and conclusion, I think the ending was masterfully done. This isn't a plot forward book. The author does an excellent job building dread, anxiety and confusion through manipulation while focusing on the characters.
The audio was narrated well with distinct voices for the characters. I think people who have issues with books without quotation marks will enjoy this audio as an alternative.
