Girls Who Play Dead

By Joelle Wellington
Girls Who Play Dead by Joelle Wellington digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Two siblings investigate the murder of a friend only to unearth even more deadly mysteries in their small town in this page-turning young adult thriller from the acclaimed author of Their Vicious Games.

When Mikky Graves left his small, stifling hometown of Prophets Lake to live with his estranged mother, he thought nothing could ever make him return for good.

Until his sister Kyla’s best friend, Erin, is murdered.

Mikky never worried about leaving Kyla behind at their family-owned funeral home so long as she had Erin. But when Mikky heads home, determined to help Kyla grieve, the sister he encounters barely resembles the one he remembers. Mikky decides, then and there, to do the one thing that seems even more impossible than returning: stay.

As Kyla spirals further into her rage and secrets, Mikky realizes the only thing that can help his sister is finding the truth about who killed Erin. But the more he investigates, the further he’s pulled into other ugly mysteries of Prophets Lake and the beauty brand that is its lifeblood. The town’s rot runs deep, and everyone has something to hide. Perhaps no one more than Kyla herself.

Girls Who Play Dead Reviews

Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“My latest read is Girls Who Play Sead by Joelle Wellington! It's an e-book that I received from NetGalley! From the start, I was hooked! And I mean, we all know how much I enjoy Dual POV books, so that was a plus! 👀 Girls Who Play Dead is a murder mystery where we follow the lives of siblings Mikky and Kyla. The book is about uncovering who was behind the murder of Kyla's best friend Erin. As the story went along, I was trying to piece things together, but I'm awful at guessing. I get it wrong 80% of the time. However, after the reveal, the person who did it made sense. If you go back and think about the subtle clues sprinkled here and there, it all adds up. Truthfully, neither of the MCs was the most likable of characters. Specifically, Kyla. Girly kept getting on my nerves. Although, you do have to take into account that they've both been through A LOT. More than anyone their age should have to deal with. I also didn't expect the book to be as sad as it was! I was constantly feeling bad for the characters. Justice for those poor kiddos! At times, the books felt slow, as if ot was dragging on. However, I did read after midnight every day, so that one could totally be on me. 😂 I commend the light that it shed on the toxicity of the beauty industry. I won't go into too much detail, but while not exact, similar situations have happened. Especially in regards to teens in the industry. Perhaps I have read into it too much, but it's alright! This was an enjoyable, funny, intriguing, albeit confusing read. I'd recommend it if you're into murder mystery stories!”
“Messy characters, tense vibes, some slow spots — but still kept me hooked. YA thriller fans, this one’s for you. 💀📚 3⭐ #GirlsWhoPlayDead #JoelleWellington #YAThriller #MessyCharacters #TenseReads #PageTurner”
“usually love Joelle’s work but this one fell flat for me 😔, the FMC was flat and stoic and I wish there were some more life and depth given to her and the plot was okay, when you get to the end it wasn’t rewarding, it was like oh this makes sense but I’m bored, I wish there was more build up to it, we explored the dynamics between her and her brother beyond what we got and took the plot further”
