The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Thinking Face“There's a lot to say about this book. The magicks in it are very well thought out and often take root in science. The characters and the world is complex, but the story remains so plot driven that by the end of the book you have the sense of barely understanding even a small piece of the universe. This is weird to say, but I would have loved this as a graphic novel. I did have some trouble parsing out what was happening at times, and I had some trouble caring about a lot of the characters. But overall, it was well done. Looking forward to continuing the series!”

Thumbs Up“I had to sit with this book after finishing it before I came to a conclusion. While I think the book had some glaring issues, I’m still really interested in the rest of the series. There were plot holes a mile wide and it was incredibly difficult to get into to start. The other reviews I read were right- you will be very confused for a good portion of this book. That may be its biggest turn off. It gets better about a quarter of the way through - the plot starts to unveil itself and pieces fall into place. However, the sense of stake was almost nonexistent for me, and I think a good part of the reason for that was how poorly the plot was explained at the start. The “romance” was stilted, barely present and borderline problematic, but somewhat believable. The author’s prose was incredibly original and one of the aspects I enjoyed the most - her diction and timing are beautiful and completely unique. I’m left a bit unsatisfied with the ending, but still very curious as to what happens next. Overall, I agree with the rave reviews that Muir has done something one-of-a-kind…and I agree with the criticisms of its odd plot structure. On to Harrow!”
