The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“I saw someone describe this as “horror fantasy comedy set in space where the comedy is specially the tumblr branch of comedy” which is just incredibly accurate. I’ve never felt so connected to a character then betrayed and heart broken. Thanks! 😀”

Thumbs Up“Loved the world building on this - the bone magic combined with everyday objects, like plastic and sunglasses, was very interesting. Got a little lost with all of the characters having multiple names, but that would have been easy to resolve if I hadn’t been listening to the audiobook. Author left some loose ends undone to leave room for a sequel, which was a little annoying but not a huge deal. Marketed as lesbian romance but not a single concrete lesbian relationship, that was a little cringe”

Loudly Crying Face“Word salad or a book. Felt like they were trying too hard to write something relatable but also grimdank. Something similar already exists, it's called Warhammer 40k. But I guess this book has more lesbian love”

Thinking Face“I strrruggled to make it through this book. So much that if I hadn't finished it by tomorrow, I was going to add it to my 1 book DNF list. But, I hunkered down and toughed it out hoping this book would grab me. I'll admit that the last 100 pages was pretty epic on the battle scene. The monster reminded me of Stranger Things and the "squishy", "splatter" descriptions had my stomach churning. That was cool. Gideon sounds like someone I could be friends with, but this book was not a win for me.”
