“While I appreciate the sentiment and suggestions for “how to get along” with, frankly, abusive coworkers, the most critical chapter in this book was an afterthought — when to leave. I purchased this book when absolutely struggling in a toxic workplace with a coworker whose behaviors could fit into every single “archetype” of this book. The author says that if you tried everything else, THEN you can leave your soul-destroying job. But only after making sure you put yourself in the shoes of the sadistic bully in your office and asking yourself if you MAYBE deserve the abuse after all. There really was something in these words that felt like victim-blaming, and for someone like me who tried for years to “figure out” and work with the bully, who went to leadership as a last resort, and finally, who left a job she had high hopes for after the limits of her mental and physical health had been beyond reached— I just find the directions in this book to be potentially dangerous. The PTSD from my own experience still lingers, though my new position is 10000x better culturally and emotionally. I hope no one “sticks it out” in a toxic workplace for any longer than they must before they can find respite and REAL, reciprocal community in another role. The detrimental consequences are far too great to stay too long with others who suck the life and joy and time out of your soul.”
