“This book was a ride. This would resonate more with me when I'm older though, since it's narrated as if remembering how one spent their youth. It explores the privileges and selfishness of youth, how one learns to slowly break out of it as one grows older. It's about a character who once took things for granted, then outcasting himself and played the role of spectator, and eventually finding his place in people's lives again. It's about the people who shaped our lives, and how we allow them to do so. It's about the love we have for people and things, and how we exhibit it, may it be gallantly or by showing restraint. It's a lot of things.
I wouldn't say it's one of my top Hesse reads but it ranks higher than most books I've read.”
