“This is truly a masterpiece and is considered Zola’s greatest work. The first half of the book builds upon the characters. The second half of the story deals with the repercussions of the strike of the mine workers. The book builds on the horrific conditions of working the coal mines and the struggle of the upper and lower classes against one another. The story is set in France so there is the struggle of pronouncing French names. I can’t recommend it enough. Great literature.”
