Genesis

Genesis by Stephen Mitchell digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"Breaks fresh ground...Mitchell's translation tells the stories in a voice much like the ancient Hebrew, without adornment."  — Seattle Times

From the author of The Gospel According to Jesus comes a new adaptation of the book of Genesis.

In this highly acclaimed translation, Stephen Mitchell conveys in English the simplicity, dignity and powerful earthiness of the original Hebrew. More than just interpreting it, he also separates stories that were combined by scribes centuries after they were written, explaining their sources and omitting all verses that are recognized as scribal additions. Like removing coat after coat of lacquer from a once-vibrant masterpiece, this allows readers to appreciate the clarity of the original tales.

Genesis is an extraordinarily beautiful book that is accessible in a way that no other translation has ever been. It will shed new light on readers' understanding of this seminal work of sacred scripture.

This groundbreaking work of textual scholarship reveals:

  • Source Separation: For the first time, the distinct voices of the Genesis authors—the Yahwist (J), the Elohist (E), and the Priestly Writer (P)—are presented independently, allowing you to read their original, self-contained narratives.
  • Unparalleled Clarity: Mitchell meticulously removes centuries of scribal additions and interpolations, stripping away layers of theological lacquer to reveal the powerful, unadorned masterpieces beneath.
  • A Living Translation: Experience the sacred scripture not as an archaic text, but through a vital, modern English that captures the powerful earthiness and simple dignity of the original Hebrew.
  • The Foundational Stories: Re-encounter the epic tales of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph with newfound understanding and emotional resonance.

“I first was introduced to to Stephen Mitchell's translation of https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43263524.Joseph_and_the_Way_of_Forgiveness_A_Story_about_Letting_Go and was blown away at how much more I related to the story. When I started reading this he mentions his involvement with Bill Moyers on a Genesis special called https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/444151.Genesis_A_Living_Conversation__PBS_Series_ . He was a big part of that discussion and I find his insight valuable. Mitchell does a great job at breaking down the different versions of the Genesis narrative and seems to agree with what I read in https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/102104.Who_Wrote_the_Bible_ and https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/169479.The_Bible_Unearthed_Archaeology_s_New_Vision_of_Ancient_Israel_and_the_Origin_of_Its_Sacred_Texts . I like Mitchell's work so much in fact that I plan to read his other biblical stories ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/82241.The_Book_of_Job , https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/262886.A_Book_of_Psalms_Selected_and_Adapted_from_the_Hebrew and https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50009.The_Gospel_According_to_Jesus ) as well as his other translations of sacred texts ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/138371.Gilgamesh_A_New_English_Version , https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/99945.Bhagavad_Gita , https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12393087.Tao_Te_Ching_by_Stephen_Mitchell_Summary_Study_Guide , https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21807284.The_Iliad__The_Stephen_Mitchell_Translation_ , https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17198429.The_Odyssey__The_Stephen_Mitchell_Translation_ , and https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34746441.Beowulf ). He transforms ancient literature into something personal and relatable, but does so with a deep understanding of the texts and the meaning behind it, while still honoring different translations of the text.”
