“gathering of waters by bernice l. mcfadden completely surprised me. i tend to blind read books and didn’t realize going in that the story was rooted in black history, which honestly threw me at first because as a young black woman i sometimes avoid stories that center too heavily on black pain. the book also opens with a spiritual, almost mystical narration that caught me off guard growing up in a more traditional christian environment. but once i settled into it, i’m so glad i stayed with it. the story becomes incredibly powerful and intimate, showing how the smallest choices people make can ripple through families, communities, and generations. it’s heartbreaking but also deeply human, and the way the town itself carries memory makes the whole novel feel haunting and reflective. this one really stayed with me. historical, haunting, generational consequences, moral weight, quiet tragedy.”
“"Whether you have embraced this tale as truth or fantasy, I hope you will take something away from having read it. I pray that you will become more sensitive to the world around you, the seen and unseen. As you go about your lives, keep in mind that an evil act can ruin generations, and gestures of love and kindness will survive and thrive forever. Choose wisely, dearest... Light, Money Mississippi" This was such a unique story told from the perspective of a place instead of a person. A powerful blend of love, lust, friendship, community, hate, and destruction—all wrapped in the magick that ties it together.”
