Gallows Hill Reviews

3.5
“I thought this was good and had a wonderful ending. Not my favorite by her, but it was well written and I just wanna hug Margot.”
“Gallows Hill is a haunted house story that eventually finds its footing, though it requires some patience from the reader to get there. While the atmosphere is thick with dread, the pacing and character growth make for a bit of a bumpy ride. The story follows Margot Hull, who has spent her life sheltered and unaware of her family’s morbid legacy. When she is forced to return to the family home (Gallows Hill), a massive estate built on the site where people were once executed, she finds herself trapped in a house is alive and hungry for revenge. As she uncovers the secrets of her ancestors, she realizes that the curse on her family isn't just a legend but a terrifying reality that wants her dead. For me, this book had a slow start. Much of the early narrative is dedicated to setting the scene and Margot’s reluctance to be there. Unfortunately, the middle also kind of dragged on, as the cycle of scares and investigations felt a bit repetitive before the plot truly moved forward. I struggled with the protagonist initially. During the first part of the book, I found Margot to be kind of whiny and annoying. Her constant hesitation made it difficult to root for her at first. However, the story improved significantly when she finally decided to take charge and try to figure things out. Seeing her transition from a passive victim to someone actively fighting against the house's influence made the second half much more engaging. Despite the pacing issues, the ending was decent. Coates delivers a satisfying conclusion that ties up the mysteries of the Hull family legacy quite well. It’s a solid payoff if you can push through the slower sections of the estate’s history. Gallows Hill is an atmospheric read that will appeal to fans of traditional haunted house stories. While the pacing and early characterization were drawbacks for me, the lore of the house and the final act make it a worthwhile read.”
“After an incredibly slow and frustrating beginning (why was her cell phone not charged/not with her??), the story picks up and I thought it was overall enjoyable and original. I don't usually read scary books but this was not particularly scary (not a complaint since I scare easily).”
“Darcy Coates always does a great job crafting a spooky story with a positive satisfying end- Gallows Hill was no different. Was it a little predictable, yes, but the story/characters/setting were unique and new enough to keep me engaged. The underground tunnels towards the end was definitely great reading. Also a good palette cleanser to some of the much darker read I tend to pick up.”
