“The most important and influential early space opera, the Lensman series starts with the book Galactic Patrol.
I found it to be a very fun, fast-paced adventure novel. It is a collection of chapters that were initially put out as fascicles in a magazine, so they each carry a punch, tell a somewhat complete story, and have effective cliffhangers.
A lot of science fiction, from Star Trek to Dune, is in-debt of the concepts developed here. There are DeLameters pistols (ray-guns), powerful itens of advanced technology (the Lens), diverse alien species allied, space pirates, an inhospitable planet home to a native drug sought by the whole galaxy, etc.
The main character Kimball Kinnison is somewhat of a perfect hero, but it is fun to follow him problem-solve himself out of a lot of situations and to out-smart and out-power his enemies.
The ending resolves the main conflict of the novel, but it also makes one engaged to keep reading the series and learn mores about the Lens and the various Lensmen of the galaxy.”“This was just pure and simple pulpy fun.”
