Run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with E. L. Konigsburg’s beloved classic and Newbery Medal–winning novel From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

When Claudia decided to run away, she planned very carefully. She would be gone just long enough to teach her parents a lesson in Claudia appreciation. And she would go in comfort-she would live at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She saved her money, and she invited her brother Jamie to go, mostly because be was a miser and would have money.

Claudia was a good organizer and Jamie bad some ideas, too; so the two took up residence at the museum right on schedule. But once the fun of settling in was over, Claudia had two unexpected problems: She felt just the same, and she wanted to feel different; and she found a statue at the Museum so beautiful she could not go home until she bad discovered its maker, a question that baffled the experts, too.

The former owner of the statue was Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Without her—well, without her, Claudia might never have found a way to go home.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler Reviews

4.0
““From the Mixed Up Files” is sooooo nostalgic. I read this with my mom when I was in elementary school and remember loving it. The premise is GENIUS and uniquely original. As a kid, it made me want to live in some beautifully furnished hideaway and bathe in a fountain full of coins. I will say, the beginning and the end had really good pacing, but I got very bored in the middle. It’s a little slow and the language isn’t super engaging, but it’s for kids so whatever. Rereading this as an adult, I appreciated so many things that I wouldn’t have given a second thought to before. I love Claudia and Jamie’s dynamic and banter. They truly are great siblings and work well together. I can’t say that they’re like any children I’ve ever met but for the sake of the story, that’s ok😂 I love the evolution of Claudia’s motivations. Understanding yourself and stepping into that is such a complex theme for a children’s book but the author touched on it nicely. I felt like I was on that journey with her. And towards the end, even though it’s literally fake, I found myself wanting to keep Angel’s secret too, for the same reason Claudia did. For some reason, the things from this book that were burned into my childhood memory were sleeping in the dusty bed, buying food at the museum snack shack, and skinny dipping in the fountain. I didn’t remember A THING about Mrs. Frankweiler. And idk why because SHE’S SO COOL!! She’s a no-nonsense diva who has her priorities straight in her old age. I love the way she pushed the kids to work for what they want and treated them like adults, whether they liked it or not. The promise of more growth in the relationship between Mrs. Frankweiler and the Kincaid siblings was such a sweet way to end the story and the last two chapters just had me smiling the whole time. Experiencing “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” again was such a lovely trip down memory lane😌”
“I read this to my fourth graders for the CKLA unit it. The beginning was dry, but it gets better!”
