Living for Art est la biographie de l’éminent collectionneur, marchand d’art, chercheur et auteur néerlandais Frits Lugt (1884-1970). Entre 1901 et 1915, Lugt travailla à Amsterdam pour une maison de vente, qui, grâce à ses innombrables efforts, a alors largement prospéré. À partir de 1915, Frits Lugt commença à constituer sa propre collection de peintures, de dessins, de gravures et d’antiquités. Tout en collectionnant des œuvres de grands maîtres tels que Rembrandt, Dürer, Rubens, Van Dyck et Watteau, il réussit également à rassembler des pièces exceptionnelles d’artistes moins connus. Frits Lugt publia tout au long de sa vie un certain nombre d’ouvrages de référence, notamment Les Marques de collections de dessins et d'estampes, outil indispensable à tous les amateurs d’arts graphiques. Living for Art relate la quête continuelle et passionnée de Frits Lugt pour des œuvres d’art et nous offre un aperçu détaillé à la fois de sa vie intime et ses relations avec les collectionneurs et les musées en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. En 1947, Frits Lugt et son épouse Jacoba Klever créèrent la Fondation Custodia, installant leur collection unique dans l’hôtel Turgot à Paris, où l’on peut toujours admirer et étudier les œuvres.
