Frenchman's Creek Reviews

3.5
“1941 ✔️ — Frenchman’s Creek ⭐️ 4/5 I desperately need a modern adaptation of this. This was so well written, so captivating, and honestly ahead of its time—but it also feels like it’s hinting at so much more. Like… give me a 2026 version immediately. If Emerald Fennell wants to get her hands on this and dial up the tension the way she does??? I would simply pass away. Romantic, atmospheric, and begging for a bold retelling. 📖✨”
“This story is a delightful escape, including pirates, adventure, and just the right touch of romance. It’s a quick, fun read that sweeps you away into another world. I loved it.”
“I loved how unabashedly queer coded this was - Our Flag Means Death owes the du Maurier estate some kudos I fear! I wish the relationship had been further developed between Dona and the Frenchmen though. I’m used to reading plot driven high stakes romantic historicals, but these tend to spend a lot more time developing the central intimacy. Here, I felt like du Maurier left the reading to take her word for it about a lot of the depth of feeling, forgoing any real time spent on the romance for time spent with Dona grappling about gender roles and dissatisfaction for the preordained life plan she found herself withdrawing from. Good, but by no means earth shattering!”
