The online economy offers challenges to traditional businesses as well as incredible opportunities. Chris Anderson makes the compelling case that in many instances businesses can succeed best by giving away more than they charge for.
Known as "Freemium," this combination of free and paid is emerging as one of the most powerful digital business models. In Free, Chris Anderson explores this radical idea for the new global economy and demonstrates how it can be harnessed for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike.
In the twenty-first century, Free is more than just a promotional gimmick: It's a business strategy that is essential to a company's successful future.

“This was written in 2008 before people realize the importance of data, and how companies will use that to sell that to others. Some of this book store multiply well talking about the history of free in marketing and advertising with really interesting in the psychology of free and how it makes us as a consumer feel.
What dates this book is examples. He uses from video games like club penguin which has shut down Ryanair, which has safety issues that has led to lawsuits. And service like Hulu, which is now purely subscription shows that free can get you a large audience to build, but it’s not sustainable in the long run. I common thing he brings up is free you’re gives you exposure and influence, which he brings up in journalism and in music, but exposure doesn’t equate to being able to make a living. Chris Anderson is able to spin a yarn very well but because he goes to multiple subject matters. It can be hard to keep track of what he’s talking about, and this book was written before the Internet became a walled garden, and the rise of subscription services. This is still an interesting read, and it’s interesting to look back at.”
