Freaky Deaky

By Elmore Leonard
Freaky Deaky by Elmore Leonard digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“Wonderfully wicked…a nonstop, pedal-to-the-metal romp.”
Chicago Tribune

Over-the-hill former counter-culture SDS revolutionaries decide to turn bomb-making—and detonating—from a political statement to a profitable enterprise in the master Elmore Leonard’s electrifying and explosively funny thriller Freaky Deaky. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch calls Leonard, “the world’s greatest cops ‘n’ robbers novelist.” The Seattle Times says, “Leonard is more than just one of the all-time greats of crime fiction. He’s fast becoming an authentic American icon.” No matter where you wish to place the man who created the character of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, lately of TV’s hit series Justified, in the pantheon of mystery and noir detective fiction demigods—John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain and the like—there is no denying that nobody does it better than the Grand Master Elmore Leonard!

“I seem to recall Elmore Leonard saying this was his favorite of all the books he'd written. Assuming my memory is correct, he said it was the most fun to write. Okay, I can kind of see it. I mean, you have a handful of colorful characters, including one of the stupidest in all of Leonard's writing (and I mean that as a compliment — stupid Leonard characters are the most fun). But I wasn't turning the pages (or clicking the next page button, as it were) as often as I have in other books of his. But there are a million factors for that, many of which have nothing to do with the quality of the book. This one deals with an movie stunt man, a cop who just left bomb squad, a guy with way too much money, his personal yes man, a former hippie, and a want-to-be actress. I think that covers the main characters. In standard Leonard fashion, their stories all intersect with each other as they interact and everybody tries to one-up everyone else, until things all come to a head and ends when there's nowhere else to go. Leonard's terse narrative keeps things moving smoothly and he's got a real ear for dialogue — few authors can really bring their characters to life with individual voices like he can — which all add up to a pretty quick and easy read. It looks like this is the third time I've read it, but the last time was over a decade at this point (and the first time was probably 10 years before that). It's worth noting that I remembered next to nothing from the previous reads. And I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing.”
“This was my first Leonard. I liked the dialogue but boy did this one fizzle out. Those last few chapters were rough. Also really didn't care for the Greta/Chris stuff.”
