South Asia Book Award Honor Book!

When Said Hossain's favorite hometown librarian dies, he must return from boarding school for her funeral and for the summer. Too bad being home makes it a lot harder to avoid facing his ex–best friend, Tiwa Olatunji, or facing the daunting task of telling his Bangladeshi parents that he would rather be an artist than a doctor.

Tiwa doesn’t understand what made Said start ignoring her, but it’s probably that fancy boarding school of his. Though he’s unexpectedly home for the summer, she’s determined to take a page from him and pretend he doesn’t exist. Besides, she has more than enough going on, between grieving her favorite librarian and her broken family while helping her mother throw the upcoming Eid celebration at the Islamic Center—a place that means so much to Tiwa.

But when the center accidentally catches fire, the mayor plans to demolish it entirely. Tiwa and Said will need to put their feelings aside if they're going to get the mayor to change his mind. Will all their efforts be enough to save the Islamic Center, save Eid, and maybe even save their relationship?

Four Eids and a Funeral Reviews

3.5
“(📖/🎧) My first ever romance book and it was such a fun read 🥹💖 honestly, it was great first impression of the genre for me <3 I liked the writing style so much! It was witty and fun, despite being edgy at times but it fit the characters lol, speaking of which i enjoyed the chemistry between the 2 MCs !! I just wish we could've focused on some other characters (especially Mrs. Barnes, i really wanted to know more about her) but in the end it was so satisfying and i enjoyed the book a lot!!”
“Positives: - Beautiful representation of the Muslim community - I liked how little bits of Islam were sprinkled throughout the book - I found the writing to be beautiful, the transition between the 2 authors was seamless - The humour embedded into this book was *chefs kiss* - There were some really strong, heartfelt lines/paragraphs that made me sit back and reflect - I liked how the authors broke the stereotype that South Asian parents only want certain careers for their children. Said's parents only wanted him to be happy, his career choice did not matter. I think this was done very well. Negatives: - Very important topics (racism, sexism, grief) brought up in this story, however, this was not delved into/dealt with much apart from the sexism later on - I found this book to be quite slow paced. I felt like there was so much going on that each "subplot" couldn't get enough attention and we sort of just jumped from one to the other without delving into each and understanding it on a deeper level - I couldn't really feel the lovers bit of the enemy-to-lovers trope. I feel like they had a childhood crush which couldn't really develop further and towards the end of the book they were just acting on the same childhood feeling - The reasoning behind why Said and Tiwa were no longer friends was built up so much that when the reason was revealed it felt quite underwhelming. I was just expecting it to be a bigger debacle than it had turned out to be”
