“I want to praise this book for being an excellent but also easy to follow political fantasy, but there were also significant drawbacks that I thought were an oversight and made the book less significant in my eyes.
I thought that the characters were not only flat but also didn't fulfill their role in the story. I didn't care when someone died because every character was just a tool for Basso to use. When characters were introduced, the reader expected (or was being directly told by the author) that the characters had a certain role in the story. But then they had little or no role at all.
As much as I loved the execution of Basso ruling the country, everything else in the novel felt unfinished.”
About K. J. Parker
is a pseudonym for Tom Holt. He was born in London in 1961. At Oxford he studied bar billiards, ancient Greek agriculture and the care and feeding of small, temperamental Japanese motorcycle engines; interests which led him, perhaps inevitably, to qualify as a solicitor and emigrate to Somerset, where he specialized in death and taxes for seven years before going straight in 1995. He lives in Chard, Somerset, with his wife and daughter.
