Publisher Description

"Space opera the way it ought to be . . . Bujold and Weber, bend the knee; interstellar adventure has a new king, and his name is Walter Jon Williams."—George R. R. Martin

Following The Accidental War, the second book of a brand-new series set in the Praxis—an epic mix of space opera and military science fiction, from a grand master of science fiction, Walter Jon Williams.

The Praxis, the empire of now extinct Shaa, has again fallen into civil war, with desperate and outnumbered humans battling several alien species for survival. Leading the human forces are star-crossed lovers Gareth Martinez and Caroline Sula, who must find a way to overcome their own thorny personal history to defeat the aliens and assure humanity’s survival.

But even if the human fleet is victorious, the divisions fracturing the empire may be too wide to repair, as battles between politicians, the military, and fanatics who want to kill every alien threaten to further tear the empire apart. While Martinez and Sula believe they have the talent and tactics to defeat an overwhelming enemy, what will prevent their fellow humans from destroying themselves?

“Solid space opera, with some interesting flair. As expected the space battles were much more present in this book, and that was for the best. Other plot lines however are starting to get stretched a little too far out, or perhaps the line between soap opera and space opera is becoming more blurred. Solid effort, but may start to struggle soon.”
“4 stars - I'm still really enjoying this series naval/military space opera (which is not necessarily my favorite genres). I don't usually enjoy naval battles in space, but the way that WJW has transferred water tactics to space using hard science (as far as I can tell) with speeds approaching light but extremely long periods of acceleration and deceleration and high Gs allowed me to enjoy it even when goes on for many pages. The innovative tactics that Martinez and Sula employ are critical to the plot (orthodoxy being the center of the Praxis) and give insight into the way that their minds work alike. Also I would absolutely despise putting the British class system in space except our main characters are fighting it. Martinez is a minor peer who is frustrated by his inability to get ahead on merits and, well, Sula is just fooling the whole system while thinking it is 100% ridiculous. Sula is still pretty much the only character who outright hates the classist empire despite the series being called Dread Empire Falls. I like the main characters even when they are blowing up their personal lives, and I'm looking forward to the third and final volume which is scheduled to be published in September 2022. Will it be the final volume? I sort of doubt of it. The first trilogy wrapped up the Naxid war while leaving many threads hanging. I don't think this second trilogy has enough pages left for the new human led, merit-based empire to be brought to fruition. That's where I think this is going.”
