Fiend
ByPublisher Description
Historical horror maven Alma Katsu turns her talents to the modern world for the first time, in this terrifying tale about an all-powerful family with an ancient evil under its thumb.
"If you liked Succession but think it would have been a lot more fun with a 1,000 year old demon, then Alma Katsu's Fiend has got you covered." —Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of Witchcraft for Wayward Girls
Imagine if the Sackler family had a demon at their beck and call.
The Berisha family runs one of the largest import-export companies in the world, and they’ve always been lucky. Their rivals suffer strokes. Inconvenient buildings catch on fire. Earthquakes swallow up manufacturing plants, destroying harmful evidence. Things always seem to work out for the Berishas. They’re blessed.
At least that is what Zef, the patriarch, has always told his three children. And each of them knows their place in the family—Dardan, as the only male heir, must prepare to take over as keeper of the Berisha secrets, Maris’s most powerful contribution, much to her dismay, will be to marry strategically, and Nora’s job, as the youngest, is to just stay out of the way. But when things stop going as planned, and the family blessing starts looking more like a curse, the Berishas begin to splinter, each hatching their own secret scheme. They didn’t get to be one of the richest families in the world without spilling a little blood, but this time, it might be their own.

“This story is about family traditions and old curses that came about centuries ago.
Maris is the middle child of the very powerful and wealthy Berisha family living in NYC. She has an older brother, Dardan and a younger sister, Nora. The head of the family is Zef and her mother is Olga.
Dardan, being the first born and a male will be the successor once their father passes. He knows the family business and the family curse/gift, which is only divulged to a select few.
Maris is determined to try and convince Zef that she should be in charge instead of her brother, since he doesn't have the same fury as her and their father.
The ride of her determination to be seen and heard is heartfelt, but dangerous.
We get some chapters that explain things from when the kids were younger, and it definitely opens your eyes on many things within the Berisha family.
I did figure out the twist, even though it isn't very obvious, but it was an entertaining read nonetheless. Fiend is worth picking up!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

“Did I enjoy this? Yes!
Did I want more? Yes!
Why not give it more stars?
Because we’re not shown enough. I initially vibed with the book. It was giving Succession and The Fall of the House of Usher. It’s dark, unapologetic, greedy, the characters are grim. But who or what is The Fiend? Is it all but a curse?
I wasn’t satisfied. My curiosity wasn’t sated. That said, this is my first AK book, and since it seems I’m into horror lately, I’ll be sure to seek out her other books. I’m open to recommendations!”
