“The story is for those who are lovers of dark fantasy, fairy core, smut, a strong female lead, and unrequited love. It is told in easy to read, short chapters, from alternating POV’s of the two love interests: Ares, the chivalrous tall and handsome fairy prince, and Layla, the fiery, independent, half mortal half fairy. Synopsis: After the downward spiral and tragic death of her mother, Layla starts noticing strange happenings around her. She feels like she too is losing her mind, paranoid that she is being watched, and seeing faces in the shadows. One evening, at a nightclub with her boyfriend, Layla bumps into a handsome stranger on the dance floor. She knows it’s wrong, but her attraction to him is instantaneous. Layla then begins to develop strange powers that she cannot explain or control. As Layla begins to delve into her mother’s research and question what is happening to her, she realizes that there are secrets about her past that are connected to the mysterious Ares who always seems to appear out of thin air. Review (with SPOILERS): The dark fairy core setting and the descriptions of the Umbra and Naturae clans had me captivated quickly into this fantasy realm. The imagery of the grotesque Umbra fairies with their glamours and veils to cover their black eyes and moss-covered flesh made my skin crawl (in a good way). I truly enjoy a good villain, and Gemini was downright grotesque, brutal and unwavering. I am beyond excited to see what Leah Wilson has planned for these two clans and their inevitable battle in the future books. In terms of the romance dynamic, I was initially concerned that the book was going to be a Twilight dupe but with fairies. BUT BOY WAS I WRONG! Layla’s character is way more bad ass than Bella. This books almost seems to be aware of classic book tropes and instantly throws them out the window. I was consistently waiting for Ares to show up and save the day like Edward, but instead, Layla stands her own ground time and time again! Here are some of my favourite Layla lines to prove my point: • “Listen here, Prince, charming I do my own rescuing” • “ I do not need protection. I’m not some naïve, helpless little princess. I’ve been doing just fine on my own thank you very much, and I don’t need some macho man with an ego the size of Texas fighting my battles for me. I can do anything you can do, and I can do it in heels”. This book does not stick to traditional gender roles typically assigned to woman in romance novels. The POV we often get from women is the “anxious attachment”. Characters who tend to need more reassurance, are consistently wondering what they’ve done wrong, and obsessing over the male character liking them. It was interesting to see the roles reversed as Layla is the definition of “avoidant attachment”; never letting Ares too close, rejecting his feelings, and only wanting casual sex. She is not our typical heroine. While, Ares, on the other hand, immediately falls in love with Layla and deems her his “other”. I am always rolling my eyes reading romance novels when two characters fall madly in love in a day. I appreciated that Layla acknowledges it is impossible to force herself to feel in love with someone she has only known for a short period of time. She feels a connection and an attraction to Ares, but she does not know him enough to connect on a deeper level. I felt that this made the story more credible and realistic. I am on the edge of my seat for a sequel to see Layla finally letting her guard down and forming a secure love connection with Ares as he shows her patience and guidance in her new life as a fairy. And don’t even get me started on the morally grey character, Dante, who is introduced at the end of the novel as Gemini’s twin brother. The dark and cunning Dante poses a threat to the Layla and Ares love connection, I CAN JUST SMELL THE LOVE TRIANGLE BREWING! You cannot forget the smut, and let me tell you, this book is ADULT fantasy, not young adult! The smut was smutting, and the steam was steamy. My only critique of the novel is I wish I had more time to spend in Layla’s head to get know her as person before introducing Ares. Ares and Layla have a meet cute in the first chapter as they literally bump into each other on the dance floor at a night club. We get a few eerie flashbacks of Layla’s mother’s mental spiral, ultimately leading to a violent episode and her tragic death. I enjoyed the horror elements of these flashbacks and would have loved to see the story begin immediately after Layla’s mother’s death to better understand Layla’s raw grief and build more tension and suspense surrounding her mother’s unravelling and Ares’s appearance. I also think a few more chapters where the reader gets to live in Layla’s head would help to develop Layla’s character so that the reader could have a deeper understanding of her mortal life. I never felt any sort of attachment to Layla’s mortal life, and almost felt like I wanted to skip of descriptions involving her annoying, self-obsessed, best friend, Maggie, and her ex-boyfriend, Steve, who verged on being abusive. I would have liked to have felt just as torn as Layla about the loss of her mortal life, but I did not feel any attachment to it. Overall: I give Featly 4.5/5 stars and I cannot wait for Leah Wilson to release more books in this series.”
“I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This book started as a charming romance that quickly became a dark fantasy. I love the enemies to lovers trope, and the story telling in this book is amazing. You truly get lost in this book, and you can't help but fall in love with the characters. Whilst the female MC is a little bit of a damsel but the other female characters couldn't be further from it. You will be on the edge of your seat and wanting to throw the book at the MCs on multiple occasions. For a new author, this is excellent. I have had to remove a star due to the lack of proofreading. There are a lot of minor spelling issues, amongst a few other errors. But if you can see past that due to it being self-published, you are in for a treat.”
