False Witness

By Phillip Margolin
False Witness by Phillip Margolin digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A lawyer who was set-up, imprisoned, and disbarred, only to be vindicated and reinstated, is determined to find out who set her up and cover their tracks with a trail of dead bodies

Defense Attorney Karen Wyatt exposed corruption in the police force and the District Attorney's office while getting her client exonerated in court. But in doing so, she put a target on her back and she was set-up on fake drug charge, imprisoned and disbarred until the conspiracy unraveled and her innocence was proven. Now reinstated to the bar, Wyatt is still interested in finding out who ordered her to be set-up - but the key figures were either killed or are in Witness Protection.

In the meantime, Wyatt is a practicing defense attorney, whose current client is either guilty of a heinous murder, or is a too-trusting patsy for an acquaintance set-up for a crime he didn't commit. It will take all of Wyatt's genius to defend her client successfully but that's just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle.

With a deadly criminal drug gang, a powerful, corrupt figure hiding in the D.A.'s office, and a Congressman who turned up with an unbelievable story after disappearing for days, False Witness is twisty, breathtaking, and unpredictable thriller.

False Witness Reviews

3.5
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“I had not previously read any books by this author previously, but when I read the description for this crime thriller, I was intrigued as it sounded different from other books I had read this year. This story follows a lawyer who had been framed for a crime she did not commit and spent a year in jail for ii, before the conspiracy was revealed. Now she is out and representing a client who is either guilty of a gruesome crime or may just be too trusting of others. Behind it all is a drug gang and corrupt law enforcement. Overall I really enjoyed this story. I felt at times it was a little hard to follow with a ton of different POVs and subplots running along the main story. The story kept me engaged the entire time and I was interested right from the start. It took me the entire story to truly figure out who committed the crimes and I was still surprised in the end. The narrator did a great job with the story, giving unique voices to all of the different characters. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for my ALC in exchange for my honest review of this novel.”
“Narrator—Thérèse Plummer did an incredible job with the narration of this book! Her cadence and the smoothness of her voice really worked for me. Story—While I liked this story and was invested, I was turned off by the sheer number of characters and sideplots. It felt like every single chapter introduced a new character, and although they’re (mostly) all tied together somehow, it was way too much for my brain to handle. Because of the number of characters, I felt like Karen was the only character I even remotely connected with, and saying I connected with her would be generous. Overall, I had fun with this one, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good crime thriller (and those who aren’t bothered by 800 characters). The biggest thank you to Macmillan Audio for sending me an ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review! <3”
“A legal thriller with some interesting subplots! 👀 I wanted to like this one more than I did, but it was just an okay read. I think my biggest issue was trying to keep track of all the characters and the multiple subplots. 😵‍💫 Not every book is for every person, so you may very well enjoy this more than I did! I will say the narration was really good and engaging!! 👏 Thank you partner Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to the gifted ALC in exchange for my honest review! ❤️”
“3/5 Very “eh.” I love all of the courtroom scenes, those were definitely the best part. A lot of this book felt like happenstance and coincidence. There were a couple of good surprises that kept me intrigued. I had a really hard time connecting with this one from the beginning, because it kind of jumps right into a story that feels as if you are Starting from the middle of a series… But you’re not. I really like this authors legal approach to thrillers, and that’s what made me stick with this one. It was entertaining, and confusing. Felt too quick to really connect with any of the characters beyond the surface. Not sure this type of writing is my vibe overall.”
“False Witness by Phillip Margolin is a quick, engaging crime novel that leans heavily into the police procedural / legal thriller category. The story follows a tough female detective and a prosecutor who team up to clear a death-row inmate of murder and unravel political corruption. The narrative focuses less on courtroom drama and more on the nitty-gritty of the investigation, featuring some seriously dark gang elements that bring a gritty, almost "Sons of Anarchy" vibe to the Portland setting. Each turn in the investigation reveals more corruption, dead ends, and dead bodies. The narrative focuses on the intricacies of the investigation and courtroom strategies, providing a detailed look at how cases are built and challenged. I enjoyed the strong female characters in this one, the unraveling of the case itself, the fast-pace, and the satisfying ending. However, I might have preferred to read this one over listening to it as an audiobook just because there were a lot of characters and different layers to the crimes. The aliens were a liiiiiiiiittle bit of a stretch for me personally, but I'm glad the author provided a logical explanation. Overall, it's a compelling and well-structured crime story that I had fun listening to! 3.5 ⭐️ overall. Thank you so much @macmillan.audio I am so grateful to receive this advanced ALC as part of the Macmillan Audio Early Listeners program. All opinions are my own.”
