About Walter Dean Myers

Walter Dean Myers (1937–2014) was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, in 1937, and moved to Harlem with his foster parents at age three. He attended Stuyvesant High School until the age of seventeen when he joined the army. After serving four years, he worked at various jobs and earned a BA from Empire State College. In 1969, Myers won the Council on Interracial Books for Children contest, which resulted in the publication of his first book, He published more than 110 books for children and young adults. His books have received many accolades, including five Coretta Scott King Award and two Newbery Honors. Three of Myers' books were National Book Award Finalists. And Monster was the winner of the first Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in young adult literature. He also received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults, the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, and he served as the 2012–2013 National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. Myers was married, had three children, and lived in Jersey City, New Jersey. He passed away in 2014.
