Surprised Face with Open Mouth“What a fantastic first introduction to M.J. Arlidge. I went into this one completely blind, and I’m so glad I did. I love a thriller that makes you question your own morals, and this did exactly that. More than once I found myself changing my mind about where I stood, and that’s always a sign of a great book for me. Rather than relying purely on twists, this story gets under your skin by asking some genuinely uncomfortable questions. There aren’t many clear-cut heroes or villains, and I loved how often I found myself torn between what felt right and what felt fair. It definitely sparked a few internal debates. I’ll admit the number of characters felt a little daunting at first, and it took me a few chapters to get everyone straight in my head. Once it all clicked, though, I was completely hooked. The short chapters made it impossible to stop, and I kept telling myself “just one more” until suddenly I’d read far more than I’d intended. The pacing is excellent, with plenty of tension throughout, and every time I thought I’d worked something out, the story nudged me in another direction. It’s gripping, thought-provoking and never feels predictable. The only reason this isn’t a full five stars is because of that slightly overwhelming start. Once I found my feet, I couldn’t put it down. This was my first M.J. Arlidge novel, but it definitely won’t be my last. If his other books are anything like this, I have a feeling my TBR has just got a lot bigger.”
“If you love true crime you’re going to love this!”
“Well, this was a change in pace. I’ve been reading fantasy a lot recently so going back to my crime thriller routes has been good! This was a twisty story that had me questioning a lot; there was a lot going on and many flaws and clues to find. This being said, there were so many characters and at times it was hard to keep up with who was who. It was also relatively predictable, that isn’t always a bad thing but I had worked out what was happening. The ending and a lot of the key points just seemed somewhat inevitable to me. Synopsis - OUR MOST NOTORIOUS CRIMINALS HAVE HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. UNTIL NOW... 'Emily' is a devoted single mother. 'Jack' starts a new job in a new town. They both share the same secret: neither of them are who they say they are. They are among only nine criminals in the UK who have been granted lifelong anonymity, for their own safety, because of their terrible crimes. But what if someone exposed their true identities to the families of their victims, who are desperate for revenge? Probation officer Olivia Campbell is caught in the crossfire of this crisis - and as the search for the mole behind it all intensifies, so too does the hunt for the vigilante killers let loose by the leaks... RIGHT OR WRONG? CRIMINAL OR VICTIM? REDEMPTION OR REVENGE?”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“I found this a difficult book to start with, the details of some of the crimes were a lot, and keeping track of all of the different people was hard to start with. But once I got about a quarter of the way through I couldn’t put it down, the chapters were short which made it such an easy read too. It’s the kind of book that really gets you questioning what’s right and wrong the whole way through!”
