“I enjoyed this book but never quite felt the weight of the uncanny that I was hoping for.
The novel is split into three parts. One reality, a second, and effectively a coda. Ari/Ibari act as mirrored protagonists, with the children of Kareem and Gloria/Nico acting as major foils.
I actually liked the pacing of the second act better as it felt like a familiar scifi novel. In the same world, I liked the version with Kareem in it. The story leaned less science, more feels than I would have preferred, but overall it’s a dynamic story.
I had also read The Glass Hotel a few years before and hadn’t retained much. But the overlap of characters did add to the intrigue of this world.”

EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL is the author of six novels, most recently Sea of Tranquility, which has been translated into 25 languages and was selected by President Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of 2022. Her previous novels include The Glass Hotel, which was also on Obama’s list, was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and has been translated into 26 languages; and Station Eleven, which was a finalist for a National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, won the 2015 Arthur C. Clarke Award among other honors, has been translated into 36 languages, and aired as a limited series on HBO Max. She lives in New York City and Los Angeles.
