“I really like how this story goes about tackling disabilities (definitely a breath of fresh air after reading the first five books of The Prophecy Begins), and I understand it wasn't entirely free to make decisions given the canon cemented by said series, but the open-endedness of the closing scenes leaves a weird taste in my mouth? I assume these characters' arcs have/will continue in the main series, and maybe I just haven't gotten there yet (or, more likely, forgotten what happened to them), so I'll give that a pass too. I also understand that the main demographic for this is fairly young, so I don't really mind the blunt dialogue and zero subtlety, but I can't help but wonder at how effectively this story utilized its art? Maybe it's just because I personally don't really like this art style, but it really felt like there was SO much dialogue and narration that the drawings couldn't really have any moments to shine. Like, obviously it's a bit of a losing battle given that this series is so violent and you can't really include all the gory details to the intended audience, but I was so unimpressed by the art aspect, which is obviously so strange because… it should have been a slam dunk? Pretty forests, four seasons, lots of cats, but I thought the character designs were pretty uninspired (and a lot of the characters looked way too similarly to each other, in my opinion!) and the backgrounds were just okay. I think maybe I've been spoiled by what I've seen the fans do with this same world and characters, but still! A real shame! I do think there is so much potential in Nightpelt's side of the story, and I understand it's always hard to find new paths to tread in a series like this one, but unfortunately I was kind of let down by this entry! Maybe I'll change my mind in the future.”
