“I really struggle emotionally with books that discuss the concept of life, death and infinity. I found this book to be deeply upsetting but in an almost soothing way? it's a very introspective book - although the post apocolyptic post-reality concept is so huge, the small details are what make this book so good. I will never forget my experience of reading this. if you're a fan of Black Mirror, Never Let Me Go or similar, you have to read this.”
“I loved this book so much! This story was like a balm for my soul and a caress to my heart. The main character was authentic and so very human. I clicked with Tao-Yi instantly and her doubts, worries, uncertainties were also my own in some way. I found this story very compelling as like the protagonist I look at the future with hope, whilst retaining my eye firmly in the past. It is a clever speculative fiction, an exploration of transhumanism from different sides. Through Tao-Yi and the other characters the reader gets a glimpse of what it means to transcend humanity and all its positives, but also what it means to choose to stay behind and slow down, appreciating the present. I was enthralled by this book and I appreciated how the writer managed to give us a full picture of humanity and its evolution. The pace of the book also gave me time to ponder all the various events and meanings, and truly look inward. In addition, there is an underlying theme of grief and loss associated with change, any type of change, be it situational or a literal change of state and being. I do relate with that a lot, as I struggle with change and it takes a lot of mental capacity out of my brain to adjust to it. I have to admit, I came into this book with a pretty clear stand on the evolution of humanity and its interlinkages with technology, but I came out of it with a more nuanced position and I think I might have retraced my steps a bit. As always, I won’t elaborate more to not spoil it, but I really recommend this book for any fans of science fiction and speculative fiction with loveable characters and a very creative worldbuilding! Thanks to the author and Verve Books for a copy and this is my honest opinion.”
“Really gutted because I had such high hopes for this one with it having such an interesting premise but for me it just didn't deliver. This story should have had such an emotional impact but it was all just very flat, I felt absolutely nothing. 😭”
“I was really looking forward to reading this one, the summary seemed to hint at a reflective look on humanity, technology, identity, and mortality while possibly wrenching my heart out, and while I loved the questions and ideas this book raised, it's nothing new - part of the plot is rather reminiscent of the show Upload or Black Mirror's "San Junipero." There's a detachment I feel with the characters, particularly with the narrator Tao-Yi. One could argue that it was intentional on Grace Chan's part for the reader to feel as detached from the world as her main character, but moments where the character seems to be in emotional turmoil - I never quite feel it. I never feel much depth in her relationship with her partner, and scenes with her friends hint at the promise of deeper, layered storytelling, but remains superficial at best. The crux of the emotion lay in Tao-Yi's rather distant relationship with her mother, but I don't think the heart of this was explored to its full potential. The writing was uneven at times and the pacing slow. This was definitely more of a general "idea book" for the reader to contemplate rather than experience with the characters. It was too cerebral to make me really care about any of the characters.”
