Every Last One
ByPublisher Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this “spellbinding” (The New York Times Book Review) novel, the author of Still Life with Bread Crumbs creates an unforgettable portrait of a mother, a father, a family, and the explosive, violent consequences of what seem like inconsequential actions.
“In a tale that rings strikingly true, [Anna] Quindlen captures both the beauty and the breathtaking fragility of family life.”—People
Mary Beth Latham has built her life around her family, around caring for her three teenage children and preserving the rituals of their daily life. When one of her sons becomes depressed, Mary Beth focuses on him, only to be blindsided by a shocking act of violence. What happens afterward is a testament to the power of a woman’s love and determination, and to the invisible lines of hope and healing that connect one human being to another.
Ultimately, as rendered in Anna Quindlen’s mesmerizing prose, Every Last One is a novel about facing every last one of the things we fear the most, about finding ways to navigate a road we never intended to travel.

“Reader beware, this novel is a horror story. Not the type with ghouls and goblins that we can read about and sleep soundly after dispelling their existence. Rather, it is something much more chilling because it tells the story of a perfectly reasonable protagonist’s greatest fears coming true. I ate the pages up in the first half, predicting what would happen and yelling “Open your eyes, Mary Beth!” Despite my predictions, when the event happened I was sick to my stomach.
I found the second half of the story to be a bit harder to get through. While I felt Quindlen captured the dizzying feeling that immediately accompanies intense grief, I was a bit annoyed and bored by Mary Beth’s continued obliviousness and efforts in maintaining a sense of control in the aftermath of the tragedy. It’s the same obliviousness that had me screaming “Look what’s happening!” and if I’m honest, I do partially blame her for what occurred. However, I cast that blame under the pretense that I would have acted differently in her position, but am unsettled by the thought that it might not have changed anything. Ultimately this is a story about how, regardless of all the attention and care we give those that we love, so much of what happens to them is outside of our control and all we can do is do our best.”
