“In Escape the Everglades by Caridad Piñeiro, ex-marine Carlos Ruiz, who lost his wife two years ago, isn’t looking for love or romance. But he unexpectedly finds it with Natalie Rodriguez, a security expert and army veteran. They grow closer while she and her K-9 Missy protect him and his son, Lucas, from poachers, and they chase leads to find and rescue his son when he goes missing.
Piñeiro’s writing is descriptive, active, and detailed, with terrific worldbuilding that drew me in from the first scene and kept me turning the pages until the last. Her dialogue is colorful and natural-sounding, and I love how she smoothly combines English and Spanish, the characters’ two languages. She develops her complex characters through funny, snarky banter and sweet, sexy, and charged intimate interactions and love scenes that reveal and evolve their characters. The novel’s high-stakes action scenes are well-constructed and exciting and place the characters at significant risk, leaving you on the edge of your seat several times during the book. I enjoyed this novel more than the last because it’s more suspenseful and action-packed.
Piñeiro skillfully develops the relationships between the characters, including between the primary and secondary characters. I love the relationships between Natalie and Carlos, Natalie and Lucas, and Lucas and Missy. Carlos and Natalie’s interactions are charged, emotional, and sexy. She and Missy help to bring his son out of his grief and emotional detachment. The South Beach Security K-9 Division is a well-oiled machine that works well together.
The scenes with the characters exploring the Everglades and protecting and caring for the animals living there are fascinating, informative, and integral to the plot. Piñeiro’s writing, description, and worldbuilding shine in these scenes and the action, investigation, and suspenseful scenes.
Sweet, sexy, funny, angsty, emotional, suspenseful, action-packed, and fast-paced, Escape the Everglades is a perfect romance for fans of single parents with children, forced proximity, protection/bodyguards, protection of animals in natural environments, nature conservation, romantic suspense, and action/adventure and mystery/thrillers set in the Everglades.
