“Content Warning ⚠️
This book contains gun violence.
My jaw dropped, I did not see the ending coming. I did not predict what would become of John Voss or how Kathy Whiting became disabled.
500 pages of small town drama. I wanted to walk away from this book but with each turn of the page I was sucked back into my own small hometown. Everyone knows everyone and everything and everyone. There are no secrets in a small town, right?
There is the one guy everyone likes. The one kid who is creating trouble but never held accountable because of who they are (or who their parents are), there are the outcasts, adults full of pride and prejudice. Nothing changes except the decay of yesteryear when industry boomed.
I enjoyed the multi-perspective from each character. It brought all the small details to a mind blowing surprise at the end. It is a VERY slow start but eventually you become invested in each character that you turn another page. Does Mrs. Whiting sell the building to Myles? Does Tick’s snake drawing win any awards? Will Jimmy Minty finally get his ass handed to him? All the popcorn eating drama one small town can provide.”Nmush

“in the end I liked some parts and felt some to be challenging for me not to skip. the characters are both endearing and rage inducing. it takes quite a while to set up the general idea, but if you like a slower burn this is a good one with rounded individual characters with their own baggage. I think the ending was a bit disappointing with how it played out and I found some characters hard to care about which is why i marked it lower.”Heidi Rose
