“Anything by L. M. Montgomery is beautiful. It’s for the dreamers, for the lovers, for those who see the beauty in the world, and of course for the natural born writers.”
“When your father dies and your host of unknown relatives arrive to argue over who amongst them should take you in, and you hide under the table to hear, unknowing that eavesdroppers rarely hear anything nice, it’s worth the effort to read along — despite any minor moralising statements. Remember, this is a period piece. Creepy in the way Anne Of Green Gables was not. Lots of cats. I love the side characters. Can’t wait to read the next book.”
“I think I first read this book in high school. I remember sitting in the back of my mom's car, reading this, and desperately hoping the drive would last until I finished the whole book. I went through a very serious L. M. Montgomery phase in my teenage years, and I remember these books in particular bringing me so much joy. Rereading as a 32-year-old adult, I can see so much more to love in this book. Montgomery has always had such an amazing gift for prose and descriptions. I remember that distinctly, and I think I got even more joy reading it as an adult. Emily is certainly a child, but she is written in such a way that brings my own childhood back to the forefront of my mind. Her thoughts and emotions are reminiscent of how deeply children feel, and how seriously they can take their own imaginings. Reading this as an adult was incredibly comforting, like being wrapped up in a warm blanket. I think I'm going to reread all of Montgomery's books, just to remember what it felt like to be this hopeful and innocent.”
