Most emphatically, Elaine’s raison d’être was to nourish “starving writers” with encouragement, introductions to Pulitzer Prize winners, and free food and alcohol. These struggling authors responded to Elaine’s support with profound gratitude.
Elaine passed away in 2010, forcing the restaurant manager to close shop shortly after. “There is no Elaine’s without Elaine,” she decreed. However, the memories remain and are recalled by a variety of Elaine’s regulars in this moving, oftentimes amusing, collection of personal essays.

“I read the synopsis on this book and thought that place sounds familiar! Sure enough I had visited this restaurant unaware of its history in 2019 when it was called “the writers room”! Learned some fun anecdotes and history on the former owner and the restaurants interesting history. While the stories were good it did seem disjointed and some may like it but the back and forth between storytellers was a bit hard to follow for me. Still, I learned a lot about the restaurants history, its frequenters, and its founder!”Draujr
