Publisher Description

Now a popular Netflix feature film, starring Jennifer Aniston, Danielle Macdonald, and Dove Cameron, as well as a soundtrack from Dolly Parton!

The #1 New York Times bestseller and feel-good YA of the year—about Willowdean Dixon, the fearless, funny, and totally unforgettable heroine who takes on her small town’s beauty pageant.

Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body.

With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any girl does.

Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

Thumbs Up“I am very disappointed in the ending, left it open ended...I hope we hear more from them in Puddin.”

Slightly Smiling Face“I watched the movie before I read the book and of course with any adaptation not everything makes it in. I was surprised by a second love interest “Mitch” who wasn’t in the movie at all. We see more of Bo’s personality in the book. But the point of the book is Willowdeans relationships with her mom her friends and herself. In the movie we do see small parts of that story and the pageant takes more of the fore front. The pageant is still in the book but it’s not as much part of the overall story than I would have expected. The rift between Will and Ellen is instigated by Ellen’s new friend Callie who is fake towards Will in front of Ellen but there’s a moment when Ellen wasn’t around and she was unaware that Will could hear her and she was making fun of her size. There were other more direct moments where she was rude and I wanted Ellen to overhear her and stick up for her friend, but that never happened. I adored Mitch and would have loved to see him get a happy ending. But overall I did enjoy the book, I’m unsure about reading Puddin’ which is described as the companion to Dumplin’ but I also don’t know what it’s about so I might.”
