Drowned

By Therese Bohman & Marlaine Delargy
Drowned by Therese Bohman & Marlaine Delargy digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Set in the idyllic countryside during a short-lived Swedish summer, this page-turner gets under the skin, creating an atmosphere of foreboding in which even the aroma of freshly picked vegetables roasting in the kitchen becomes ominous.

Marina has left behind her stalled relationship and floundering academic career in Stockholm and travels to rural Skåne to visit her sister, Stella. They haven’t seen each other in some time, and Stella now lives with a much older, quite famous author, Gabriel. The couple resides in a beautiful old house full of books, gorgeous flowers and, as Marina soon learns, plenty of secrets. Despite herself, Marina becomes more and more enthralled by the enigmatic and unpredictable Gabriel, even as she becomes convinced that something isn’t right about her sister’s new love.

Nothing is as it seems in this spellbinding novel of psychological suspense that combines hothouse sensuality with ice-cold fear on every page. More than a mere thriller, it delves deep into the feminine soul and at the same time exposes the continuing oppression of women in Sweden’s supposedly egalitarian society.

Drowned Reviews

Anxious Face with sweat“Read in 23 minutes. This book whispered to me, gently enveloping me into the dreamt haze of the book, before yanking me under the surface. I think any reader would guess at the ending but this poignant book highlights the relationship between two estranged relationships, jealously of their lives, greed, and repentance. It’s eerie and bewitching with all its description of budding flowers and overgrown plants: it reminds me of books like Swan Sister and oddly enough, Annie Bot. Read this and hug your sisters harder, and remember how fragile yet resilient that woman are. Quote: The clock on the wall is ticking loudly now, I think it sounds irregular, some seconds are far too long, as if the hand is hesitating before marking each second, unsure whether it wants to continue into the future or not. “I missed Therese Bohman in my life so muchh. The thing I enjoyed most was the setting and how it impacted the story, revealing that everything is quietly, but definitely, falling apart. The second part is where I got a bit more sceptical. I couldn't justify the main character's actions and I know that I wasn't supposed to, but I just felt too bad for her sister. Overall I'm glad that it managed to suprise me and I'm sad that I have only one of Bohman's books left to read </3”
“First of all, and I’m repeating myself here: just because you are able to write doesn’t mean you can or should. Second, the plot is nonexistent. It’s like a feverish dream except this one is a nightmare. Third, damn, you don’t need any enemies with a sister like main character. Did the writer try to write the most revolting main character? If yes, then it’s still bad. Like bad bad. I just wished this book to STOP.”
