Die of Shame
ByPublisher Description
A brutal murder casts suspicion on a London therapy group in this thriller from the author of The Bones Beneath: “One of my favorite new writers” (Harlan Coben).
Every Monday evening, six people gather in a smart North London house to talk about shame. Among them are a grieving surgeon, a betrayed housewife, a taunting gay model, a barely recovered heroin addict. All they have in common is a history of pain and compulsions—until they’re linked by the brutal murder of one of their members. Det. Inspector Nicola Tanner is drawn into this intimate circle to find the killer. Unfortunately, not a single one of them is willing to share.
Now it’s up to Tanner to delve into their pasts on her own. But what secret could be so shameful as to kill for it? Or die for it? And how can she possibly find the truth when lies and denial are second nature to her suspects?
From British thriller master Mark Billingham comes “one of the best crime novels of the year . . . Shocking, frightening, gripping” (The Independent).
“Billingham is one of the most consistently entertaining, insightful crime writers working today.” —Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl
“Keeps the reader guessing, and second-guessing.” —Tampa Bay Times

“It's sometimes difficult to be a fan of genre fiction because the market is saturated with titles to choose from, and you have to wade through a lot of bad writing to find writers who are actually gifted. When you find a writer you like you cling to that writer like a life-preserver. This is my first Mark Billingham novel but I have already ordered copies of the first three Tom Thorne novels, that's how pleased I was with this novel.
The mystery was simple but well-crafted, and the story was definitely a page-turner. I hate when mystery writers try to get too cute in their plot in order to throw off the reader. Stick with the classics - greed, revenge, love, hate. They aren't overly complicated, and if you know how to write you don't need anything fancy. I finished this in one day, despite the 400+ page count. I was not disappointed with the reveal, even though I had correctly guessed the identity of the killer. Knowing the killer didn't ruin my experience in any way because the slow reveal was so well done. Like any good mystery writer, Mr. Billingham leaves bread crumbs throughout the narrative to point the way if you only know where to look.
This goes on my mystery shelf right next to Dennis Lehane. Can't wait to read more of this author!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.”

“This was the mixture of utter boredom but also at times super interesting and incredibly thrilling. I was intrigued by the premise but mostly just found the story dragging and by the time we got the end reveal, I was surprised but just didn’t seem to care anymore.”
