“Three and a half stars. I thought it was a pretty good exploration of a girl growing beyond her fundamentalist upbringing. I know the author worked pretty closely with girls who left the Quiverfull movement, and I think it shows in the way Rachel's family is depicted. I also liked that Rachel didn't make the immediate leap to the opposite end of the scale and become a liberal atheist, although I still think she adjusted a little too quickly to life outside her family for someone who had been so extremely sheltered. I also liked the portrayal of Lauren, her older mentor who escaped several years ago. Lauren IS a liberal atheist and gets frustrated with Rachel's much slower pace in leaving behind the trappings of dysfunctional religion. Before she left, Lauren had a much more messed up family life, it's implied, and her own position is completely understandable, although very different from Rachel's. I liked the two girls' interactions and the way Mathieu depicted Rachel's decision to hold on to her faith and develop her own worldview and self-confidence at her own pace. The writing is mostly serviceable with a few sparks that seem more polished. It would be appropriate to hand to younger teens if they can handle a little bit of very strong language from Lauren.”
“This was a crazy story. something completely different compared to my normal reads. But I still enjoyed it very much and it gave me a different perspective of things. 💝”
