Descendant of the Crane

By Joan He
Descendant of the Crane by Joan He digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In New York Times and Indie bestselling author Joan He's debut novel, Descendant of the Crane, a determined and vulnerable young heroine struggles to do right in a world brimming with deception. This gorgeous, Chinese-inspired fantasy is packed with dizzying twists, complex characters, and intricate politics.

TREASON

For princess Hesina of Yan, the palace is her home, but her father is her world. He taught her how to defend against the corruption and excesses of the old kings, before revolutionaries purged them and their seers and established the dynasty anew.

Before he died, he was supposed to teach her how to rule.

TRIAL

The imperial doctors say the king died a natural death, but Hesina has reason to believe he was murdered. She is determined to uncover the truth and bring the assassin to justice.

TRUTH

But in a broken system, ideals can kill. As the investigation quickly spins out of Hesina’s control, she realizes that no one is innocent. Not the heroes in history, or the father she thought she knew. More blood will spill if she doesn’t rein in the trial soon—her people’s, her family’s, and even her own.

Thumbs Up“I had fun with this. Loved the court drama and the backstabbing (literally and metaphorically) Unique magic system👍🏼”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“A very intricate plot story, with a lot of political intrigue, and most of all is how to unveil the truth from a weave of lies. Knowing who to trust and who will betray in the end. A plot twist that you will not expect but can be really seen in a plain sight. But overall it’s a good read, mystery and heartbreaking relationship to the characters. Hoping it would become a series, because it was an open ending. Will the war start after the queen escaped from the trials? What will happen to Sanjing now he became the general and to her adopted brother who governed the country. There was lot of question after the epilogue 😩😩”
“to learn, her mind had needed to unlearn. I thought I was going to love this one but unfortunately it just didn't work for me. the beginning started off strong, it had me intrigued but I don't know.. the story just fell flat for me later on in the book. the writing didn't flow well, the pacing was off, and I just couldn't connect to the characters. It had it's moments and a ton of beautiful quotes though. also, this cover is prettier than me but i'm ok with it. extra star for that!”
Slightly Smiling Face“An interesting murder mystery that turns into a wonderful character exploration with some nice worldbuilding. definitely worth reading if you like fantasy/magic as well as some mystery.”
Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“I really enjoyed this! The world building was unique and the build up was really well done. Sad to find out the sequels will probably never get made. I will definitely check out the author's other works though!”
